Hosted by David Heil from PBS' Newton's Apple series, this inside look at Bell Labs was a special created for satellite television, broadcast to middle-school students nationwide
This was produced as part of National Science and Technology Week, an effort by the National Science Foundation that existed between 1985 and 2000. In this production, Heil travels through the Labs, visiting different scientists and technology fields, accompanied by various students. 60 students are part of the "studio audience" for the live broadcast within the Labs, interspersed by pre-taped segments. Arno Penzias, who later became a co-host of this series, is interviewed, among many other Bell Labs scientists.
One of the high points is a visit — and drive inside — the cellular signal-testing van, which is an ordinary small van. In it, you get a sense of how scientists actually work: an un-glamorized view.
